A native of Battle Creek, Michigan, Wells co-founded the faith-based dance-pop band Royal Tailor in 2011. Together, the band released two popular full-length albums and one EP between 2011 and 2013, during which time they also picked up two Grammy nominations and a Dove New Artist of the Year award. Wells eventually parted ways with the group to pursue a solo career and in 2016 inked a deal with Sony CCM imprint Provident Label Group, later releasing his first single, "Love Is Action," followed by the EP Undefeated.
Early 2017 brought the release of "Hills and Valleys," a single which proved a Christian radio hit and later paved the way for his debut full-length album, also titled Hills and Valleys. Boosted by heavy Christian radio airplay of "Hills and Valleys" and "When We Pray," the album earned a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Christian Music Album. In 2020, Wells returned with his sophomore full-length album, Citizen of Heaven, which landed at number three on Billboard's Top Christian Albums chart.
